WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT IN THE THERAPY ROOM
It is worth considering, that on top of the different modalities, all therapists have a ‘style’ or way of working that is unique to them. With that in mind, it is probably good to know from the start that I am very much committed to helping my clients be the best version of themselves. I believe that everyone has arrived at the version of themselves they are today because of what they’ve been through. There are always understandable reasons why someone is having a tough time or struggling with something, so in that vein, I am far more likely to ask what has happened to you, versus what is wrong with you - even if you have a diagnosis.
I am engaged and active during our sessions, and while I am all about making space to listen and understand you, it is unlikely you’ll find too many awkward silences. At the same time, the reality is, therapy takes work and is not an exact science. To help us make sense of things I might recommend a book or podcast I think you might find useful or share a handout that explains the mind and body connection and our incredible nervous system. Whether working face to face, online, individually or as a couple, we have plenty of tools at our disposal to help remove some of the stigma and confusion that surrounds the more common symptoms and difficulties you might be experiencing. Throughout our sessions, you’ll very much be the focus as we will likely make space to consider the meaning of events, muse over thoughts and feelings, all the while noticing how all that might be impacting your goals, whatever they may be.
Of course, some people already have a unique goal and are ready to get started in a particular way, and that’s great, but some of our work might be to figure out where to even start if you’re just not sure.
Rest assured, you don’t need to show up with the answers, especially if that in itself is causing anxiety. Just bring yourself and I will offer up theories, or ideas for ways of working, based on my knowledge and experience. Sometimes it is useful to just try things out and see what fits without any pressure to be sure of any label or meaning.
However, it is worth saying, I do not believe in listing every possible condition or difficulty, and instead prefer to have a conversation about you as a person, not as a label or a diagnosis. Similarly, I firmly believe no therapist is qualified or able to work with every presenting issue, and if I don’t feel I am the right therapist for you, I’ll do my best to signpost you to a more suitable service.
